Waiting for the Game

This is one of those odd Sunday’s where we wake up but have hours to wait before the Patriots game. I am making out my list of things to do before we finally get to the game.

There has been so much hype for this game since the Patriots won last Sunday. First we had stories about how the Pats have played on the road this year; then there was talk about the bitter cold expected; then a quarterback comparison and a coaches comparison. We’ve had Boston sports reporters going to various sports bars and barbecue joints in Kansas City; stadium pro shops where people are buying jerseys and then finding local fans in enemy territory.

I’m always impressed by how much these games have an impact on the local economy. All you have to do is look around when you go grocery shopping and you’ll see t-shirts, special cakes, paper plates and Mylar balloons. There are Game Day snack displays and those little napkins shaped like footballs.

Two of my children work for a sporting goods store and we had them over today for the game. They were discussing how the scheduling at the stores would be one thing if the Patriots win and another if they lose. Gotta get those AFC Champion hats.

That’s why Dick’s Sporting Goods and Olympia Sports had such a good Christmas: thanks for winning the World Series Red Sox! Now, how about the Pats go to the Super Bowl?

Boston sports fans have truly been spoiled with win after win. Can you imagine being a Buffalo Bills fan? New York Jets? Miami Dolphins? (That’s me. It’s been a long time.)

Tell the truth, when you go to your closet you have to decide WHICH Super Bowl sweatshirt you’re going to wear or which World Series hoodie. I have 2004, 2007, 2013 and 2018.

There have been plenty of stories this week about the Patriots domination ending but it apparently wasn’t this year. If Tom Brady is slowing down at all at age 41 I haven’t seen it.

This week it’s almost like the Patriots having the Sunday night game or Thursday or Monday night. It’s a long wait for fans until kickoff. Remember: pace yourself. If you start snacking too soon you’ll be stuffed before it matters. The same goes for drinking: you don’t want to be asleep before game time. Or worse, drunk and loud.

So come on 6:40 p.m. (or 3 p.m. if you’re watching the Rams and Saints).

I’m hoping for a Saints vs. Patriots Super Bowl with Drew Brees going against Tom Brady but we’ll see…..in a few hours.
