Once The Weather Turns All Is Forgotten

I was thinking about this the other day, as I sat in the yard in the sun: Once the weather turns all is forgiven.

In case you’re a new reader I’ll say it again… I hate March in New England.

I’ve written a few blogs about this in the past. You get all excited because the first day of spring is coming and then … SNOW! Or a least WIND!

There used to be a weather man in the Berkshire’s, George Bulgarelli, who always said that spring doesn’t arrive in New England until three weeks after the calendar says so. There have been years I would say it’s more like six weeks.

However, once the weather turns warm, I tend to forget all about it!

Gone are the days of the biting wind off the ocean! I no longer have to wear three or four layers to broadcast an outdoor game. Players no longer have to try to fit a hoodie under their uniform. There was a softball game this April where the umpire had to keep calling time while the wind whipped up the stone dust in the infield.

I’ve noticed over the years that there always seems to be a day when the wind makes that change from winter to summer mode.

The breeze becomes pleasant instead of painful. I’ve always wanted to catch the moment or day that that happens but it’s something I usually just notice one day. “Hmm! It’s not a cold breeze anymore.”

I mentioned on the show the other morning that I thought we were entering the five months when this is the greatest place to live. I think mid-May to mid-October we have the most fantastic weather and so many things to do. We have the beach, the seafood, boating, sunsets, fairs and feasts. When fall comes we still have some beautiful days and the foliage. The rest of the months? Well ….

November can be nice. December brings Christmas but then comes the winter. Like I said, March is a tease and April can never be relied on. Could be nice….could have rain and a wind chill of a totally unpleasant 34 degrees.

I know: “If you don’t like it, MOVE!” Thought about it. Yup, thought about it. My wife is still working and loves the area. All of our friends are here. We have roots. My southern children keep suggesting we move to Virginia Beach. They tell Priscilla that they have ambulances and paramedics there but she’s not looking to start over again with another company. Of course they remind me that I’ll be okay since I can lay on the couch anywhere and write. Ouch!

We just love our little house down by the water and, for the next four or five months, it’s a beautiful place. I do tend to visit down south probably for longer stretches of time in the colder months. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of these years one of the kids inherits dad for March. Bet they’ll love that! At least I can cook.

Enough about that. For know let’s enjoy summer! Sure we’ll have a few heatwaves and maybe tropical storms but once the weather turns…this is a beautiful place!
