The Month of March

This year I’m going to try. I’m really going to try.

This year I’m going to try and like March.

I’ve never been much of a fan of the month of March. It’s such a tease. You think we’re through with winter and the threat of snow and then BAM! Three or four inches or feet!

Spring finally arrives…..on the calendar…..but It’s still cold.

We change the clocks in March which is another way to tease you. You get more daylight after work but the weather is usually too gloomy to do anything with it.

I think my frustration with March started all the way back when I was in school. March = no vacation days or holidays.

September only had Labor Day at the beginning but everything was so new you really didn’t notice.

October had Columbus Day plus you were excited about your Halloween costume.

November brought Veterans Day and Thanksgiving break.

December was fantastic with Christmas vacation that was one and sometimes TWO weeks long!

January had Martin Luther King Day and maybe some snow days.

February brought Presidents Day, February vacation and maybe more snow .

Then stupid March.

April had another vacation, Patriots Day and usually Easter.

May had Memorial Day and then June brought summer vacation.

March? Yup. The sky is gray, the trees are bare and the wind seems to blow in your face no matter which way you turn.

I was never a big St. Patrick’s Day fan. I do like that there’s some baseball on TV but after the 5th inning you can’t recognize any of the players.

I’m going to try though.

Acushnet Creamery is opening March 7th so maybe I’ll put on extra layers of clothes and go buy some ice cream in a waffle cone. At least it won’t melt in the heat, but it may drip on my mittens.

Maybe I’ll turn the heat up, put on shorts and flip flops and enjoy some Jimmy Buffet or Kenny Chesney tunes.

It’s too early to plant my garden but maybe I’ll spend some time each morning visualizing a bumper crop. Feel the breeze and imagine that dirt desperately in need of water because it’s been so hot.

Hey! I’m trying!

I could start grilling I guess. Just stand there in my big puffy parka while I wait for the weiners to cook. Do you think the corn man will be out soon?

Maybe I’ll start a movie marathon or challenge myself to see how many books I can read before April comes.

Somehow we always seem to manage. Before long we’ll start complaining about the humidity. Ah New Englanders and their complaining, it’s what we do.
