Why Do They Think They’re Stress Is Worse Than Mine?

I’ve heard a number of stories lately that make me wonder why some people think they’re stress is worse than mine?

We’re all under stress whether it’s the fear of catching Coronavirus or living with all the restrictions. No movies, no concerts, no vacations. Wearing that hot and uncomfortable mask everywhere we go or in my case – always having to go back in the house because you forgot the dang thing.

Stress from the riot at the Capitol and the thought that they might have had some inside help,

Stress from the last three months of this presidency no matter which side you’re on.

I get it, You’re stressed.

We’re all feeling it yet some people act out either in the stores, restaurants or at any time they deal with other people. They take out their frustrations on others that are struggling with it just the same as they are.

Personally I have not dealt with any “Karens.”

What does ‘Karen’ mean?

Karen is a  slang term for an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman who uses her privilege to get her way or police other people’s behaviors.

My daughter, Sarah, ran to the grocery store the other night because we needed two, just two, sweet potatoes for dinner. The clerk at one register called her over and there she was, walking toward the checkout with a sweet potato in each hand when a woman, with a full shopping cart, cut right in front of her because she was in a hurry I guess.

Sarah said, “Excuse me ma’am, I think she was calling for me.”

‘Karen’ replied, “I didn’t see it so I’m going.”

It was right about that time that Karma arrived as she dropped her cellphone, breaking it, which might have caused Sarah to chuckle.

My wife, Priscilla, the Paramedic, has a story from just about every shift of a patient who just acts angry or entitled.

People! We’re better than this.

My mother taught me that saying, “You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” Translation for those that can’t get it : It is much easier to get what you want by being polite rather than by being rude.

Conclusion

You are not more important than me. But you know what? I’m not more important than you either. I’m sorry if you’re in a hurry or late for work or if someone in your life is sick. Maybe explain yourself if you feel you really need to cut in front of me. I just might listen. However, you’re not entitled. We’re all in this mess together. What do you say we try to help each other get through it all together?

    Hi Pete !
I cant believe that woman wouldn’t let Sarah go ahead with only 2 potatoes even if that lady had been called first ! I always let someone go ahead with a few items or let them know they can take it up to the courtesy desk to check out those few items …a little courtesy goes a long way..I am in Florida and thankfully,so far, I haven’t met much rudeness when I shop .

I find particularly in Market Basket there is no middle ground. Some of the people are so rude that I just want to hit them in the back of the legs with the carriage and the others are happy and chatty – good natured almost to a fault. The last time I was shopping, this very nice lady starting chatting with me about something in the dairy area and we were pulled over to leave plenty of room for people to pass. After a couple of minutes, this man came over to us and wanted to know why we thought we were entitled to block the way when he was in a hurry. Before I could say something sarcastic, that sweet little old lady landed in to him with a lecture about courtesy that would make your head spin. The funniest part was when she was finished,3 or 4 people around our area clapped for her. She was quite a character. I ran into her a number of more times in the store and it was amazing how people would sort of give her a side glance waiting for her to rip someone else a new one. Honestly, she was the high point of that trip to MB. They have a majority of really nice customers but, the minority of those left are the rudest people I ever met.
