Do you celebrate your birthday? And if not, why not?
My friend, Scott, celebrated his birthday this week. Or maybe I should say he observed his birthday this week. I say that because, at one point, I heard him say, “Ah it’s just another day.”
He’s not alone. I’ve heard that from many people over the years.
“It’s just another day.” Is it though?
I always celebrate my birthday. Of course that could be because I love cake but hear me out.
Why not celebrate your birthday? It’s a day to celebrate YOU! I’m not saying you need balloons and streamers, though if you want to, go ahead! You do you!
I love it when I get birthday messages on Facebook. I really do appreciate each and every one of them and I like to reflect on the person who sent it and think about how we met.
If you’re upset that you’re getting older, I say celebrate the fact that you’re still here!
Take this as an opportunity to look back over the years and remember all the good times. And try not to be sad that those days are in the past. I read something once that said, “Don’t be sad those days are gone. Be happy they were once here.”
If your health is not what you wish it would be, celebrate the things you’ve overcome. You survived! You’re still here! There are still things to learn and enjoy! It may not be the life you would choose but there is still much to be done.
Your birthday is your day! It marks the day you arrived on this planet. And before you say it doesn’t matter…let me go all “It’s A Wonderful Life” on you.
Imagine what this world would be like if you had never been born. Think about all the people you’ve met and the impact you have had on so many. And don’t downplay it. You may have impacted someone in the slightest way that seems insignificant to you but meant the world to them. You may never know.
I’m sure my friend’s daughter and family did something to celebrate his day. In fact, he went out for dinner Monday. I took him out for breakfast Tuesday. Another friend took him out Wednesday and yet another friend planned dinner for Friday. He told me if he could just find someone for Thursday it would be a perfect week!
If you find yourself with no one to celebrate with… do it yourself! Enjoy your favorite restaurant or cook your favorite food. Buy yourself something nice! And some of those store-bought cakes are delicious!
Oh, and if you happen to have some leftover cake…well….did I mention that I love cake?
Celebrate your next birthday. You deserve it!
