I saw a terrific video this week. It was a TikTok made by Sam Demma. Sam is a best-selling author and one of the most in-demand motivational speakers. This story has been told by a number of motivational speakers and preachers.
Here’s how it goes:
Imagine you made the wrong turn in your car and your GPS said, “I’m done working for you!” Or it just gives up.
Instead it just says, “Recalculating.”
It keeps the same destination in mind but finds a new pathway to get you there.
If you treated your goals the same way your GPS treats your final destination, you would always reach them. That one missed turn, that one small mistake, is not going to ruin the entire journey.
Recalculate. Take a new road.
Hit me right in the feels!
How many times have we been trying to achieve something only to have life get in the way? It may be a career or financial setback. The children or grandchildren might need something from you, maybe just your time, and you have to take a step back. Maybe a parent needs you to take care of them. We don’t have to give up, we just have to recalculate.
Sometimes, as I well know, a medical issue stops you in your tracks and you have to regroup. You have to adjust. You have to recalculate.
A Facebook friend also posted a meme this week:

(Yes, when I saw these two posts just days apart I realized this was the thing I should I should write about this week. Inspiration is everywhere!! You just have to keep your eyes open.)
It is so easy to give up when we can’t seem to stay on the path. You even start to try and rationalize it.
“I guess it’s not meant to be.”
“I guess this is a sign.”
Did you ever think, “It’s not time…YET!”
Then there was the affirmation I read this week.
“I am exactly where I’m supposed to be.” I’ll wait while you read that again……
Wow! “I am exactly where I’’m supposed to be.”
When I was younger I used to think “I need to find myself. I need to find my purpose in life”.
As we get older our thinking changes and (hopefully) we learn more. I now believe it IS true. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. Does that mean this is it? This is what the rest of my life will look like? I don’t think so. I think I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be RIGHT NOW!
A few years ago I wrote a Sunday Column for the New Bedford Standard Times. That’s where this whole adventure started.
One week my column was titled, “Plan B Is Not So Bad.”
In that column I wrote that my wife and I were out for a walk when we noticed the dirt road up ahead was full of mud. We decided to stay on the paved path and head back the way we came. I said, “Sometimes you have to go with Plan B. In fact, my whole life has been a Plan B.” We both laughed but then I realized, it’s probably Plan B for most of us.
I don’t think I know anybody who has had their life go exactly as they planned when they were younger. I then wrote, “If it has for you, Hallelujah!”
Maybe that’s why the GPS is “recalculating.” This isn’t our final destination but it’s where we are right now. We may need to switch to Plan B or, for some of us, maybe it’s Plan C, D or even Plan Q!
That’s the thing about the GPS: your destination doesn’t necessarily change. The only thing that changes is how we get there. Did you make a wrong turn? Maybe you turned off the road because of a new development. It could be the path we set for ourselves is under construction or the GPS steers us away from danger. Maybe we forgot to take along something we’ll need later and we have to go back and get it.
Maybe you’re not at your destination…YET! It could be you’re exactly where you are meant to be…at least for now.
