Appreciation For The Four Seasons

I was walking the dog this week in the light snow we had Wednesday morning. I had on my winter coat, hat and gloves and Charlie was in his winter coat. Suddenly I had a flashback to just a few months ago.

It was only four or five months ago that we would only go on a short walk because it was too hot outside. We would also try to go in the morning or the evening so the pavement wouldn’t burn his paws.

I kind of like the four seasons we have here in New England.

I’ve never pretended to like the cold. Well, maybe when I was much younger I didn’t mind it but my tolerance for the cold has gotten smaller and smaller over the years. I’m actually okay with it when it first approaches and then during the holidays. And I’ve made no secret of my disdain for March. By then I’ve HAD IT with the cold, gray days. We all talk about Spring but the warmer weather never seems to get here until mid April or even May.

This week though I found myself appreciating the four seasons. I don’t know if I could ever live full time in a warm climate. I dream about hitting the lottery and becoming a snowbird. I could see myself heading south after the holidays and returning in April or May but I don’t think I could make it full time. We have a family member who moved from Vermont to Florida. Vermont got some decent snow this past week and she was commenting on the pictures my nieces were posting on Facebook and she admitted that she does miss Vermont at times. I’m sure those -15 degree mornings are not one of those times but I could see her point.

After a hot and humid summer there is something refreshing about those fall mornings. And, of course, the foliage can’t be beat.

I do like some of winter, especially the first snowfall. Now that I don’t drive as much I do enjoy it when there’s a winter wonderland. Who doesn’t wish for a white Christmas?

Spring and summer are especially beautiful around here, it’s what we wait for.

This is the first year my daughter, son-in-law and grandson have spent in south Texas. I sent my grandson a video of the snow falling the other day.

They’re coming up for a visit between Christmas and the new year and I’m really hoping we get some snow for him. My daughter told me it was 73 degrees the other day and she doesn’t think she’ll have a chance to wear her Christmas sweaters. Maybe in Texas they have ugly t-shirt parties?

I’ll let you know Sarah’s thoughts after she completes her first year without the changing seasons. She spent a few years in Virginia Beach but they still had some cold days and even some snow at times. Somehow I don’t think that’s going to be an issue in Corpus Christi, TX. In fact, she wants to have us all down there some year for Christmas so we can have a barbecue.

So enjoy our four seasons here in New England. Just don’t be surprised if I spend March in Texas. The family is already expecting it.

New England is very pretty and I like the architecture but I can say , after almost 20 years in Florida , I do not miss the cold , ice and snow !! We do get seasonal changes here and we are not happy when the temp goes below 50 at night !! Gets very dry and cold. I rather it not be in the 90’s for an extended time but we have to take that in order to enjoy our winters here …all about compromise :>) I do hope you enjoy your Texas barbecue some day ..
