Shocking Revelation: I Like Hallmark Movies

I may have to turn in my “Man Card” after this one.

True confession: I like Hallmark Movies. Well, the Christmas Hallmark Movies.

It all started last year when my daughter, Sarah (and grandson Liam), were staying with us while my son-in-law was deployed with the Navy. Every night my wife, Priscilla, and Sarah would pour a glass of wine, snuggle under warm blankets and watch a Hallmark movie. I, of course, would make fun of them and go upstairs to read my book.

One night they invited me to join them and…. I actually enjoyed it! It was cute! It was Christmasy! (Is that a word?) They fell in love or saved Christmas or found a puppy or whatever.

This year we haven’t had our usual shows to watch because of the writer’s strike or the actor’s strike or whoever was on strike. Probably for that reason Hallmark started showing Christmas movies on the weekends in October and we have taped and watched a few. I’ll admit that I still have a little fun with it.

“I bet those two fall in love!”

“And THERE’s the conflict!”

“She won’t move back to the big city. She’s falling in love with him!”

“Where’s the puppy? Wait! THERE it is!”

I read a story the other day about why people love the Hallmark Christmas movies so much.

The experts say it’s because they provide a happy, mindless escape from all the ugliness in the world.

Could be.

Think about all the “stuff” that’s shoved at us each day. I have friends who have stopped watching the news every night because they just can’t deal with it anymore. Who needs it? The violence, the anger, the hatred and, let’s face it, the stupidity. For about 90 minutes these movies give us an escape.

I did have an idea today for a Hallmark Christmas Movie sequel. Hear me out: We go back to that wonderful Christmas village a year later or in the dead of winter. Is the special couple still together? Did she discover he snores and she hates the way he chews his food? ? Is she glad she gave up the big city job? Do they still have the puppy?

I also came across the rules for the Hallmark Christmas Movie Drinking Game. Hey! I read a lot!

This was courtesy of Good Housekeeping.

Take a Drink When …

  • Two attractive people bump into each other.
  • Someone mentions how much they hate Christmas.
  • Someone complains about the “big city.”
  • The town goes caroling.
  • They make Christmas cookies.
  • Two characters almost kiss.
  • A character has a tight deadline.

Finish Your Drink When …

  • A character rediscovers the magic of Christmas.
  • There’s a misunderstanding between the main characters.

Take a Shot When …

  • The main characters fall in love.
  • It starts snowing when the main characters kiss.

Just make sure you turn in your car keys before starting.

So there you have it, I like Hallmark Christmas movies. However, I still watch plenty of football and love me a good action film where stuff blows up! Just showing my softer side at times I guess.

Thay are a nice escape and just enjoyable to watch people being kind and pleasant .. Happy Thanksgiving to the family !
