I Can’t Be The Only One With These Random Thoughts

It’s time for another “Random Thoughts” column. These are things that cross my mind from time-to-time. I try to write them down in my “Writer’s Notebook” before I forget them. I’ve found that, the older I get,  I have to write things down right away or I lose them. Sometimes things come to mind when I’m driving so I’ve learned to pull out my phone at a red light and make a quick voice memo.

Many times these thoughts turn into a column or, if they’re not long enough, I just save them until I have a few that I can feature like I’m doing this week.

Did you ever notice you can always tell when someone else loaded your dishwasher? We all have our own way of doing it don’t we?

One of my chores every morning is to empty the dishwasher. Every morning I can count on the coffee cups being here and the plates and bowls there. My wife and I set things up pretty much the same way, maybe with some variation.

Well, recently we had company and my daughter and son-in-law volunteered to clear the table and do the dishes. Who am I to complain? Now I know it’s not a big issue and I truly appreciate the fact that they did the cleanup the other night but imagine my surprise when I opened the dishwasher the next morning: “What is this? THIS doesn’t go there? Why is this over here?” Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things, the dishes got cleaned, but it was a weird morning!

Does anyone else turn the volume of the radio in the car down before you turn off the car?

How many times have you got into your car in the morning, turned the ignition and HAD YOUR EARS BLASTED BY THE VOLUME? “Whoa! What was I rocking out to last night?”

I think the reason it’s so high is either that your favorite song was the last thing you heard or you were gradually turning the radio volume up and up as you got used to all the sounds on the road as you were traveling. When you get in the car the next morning everything is quieter so…BAM!

I have actually gotten into the habit of turning the volume down before I park the car so I won’t have that happen the next morning.

Have you seen that TV commercial where the guy is cleaning the dirty ring around his bathtub? I can’t remember what the product is, which probably doesn’t make it a successful commercial, but I have one question:

How did his bathtub get THAT dirty?

Trust me, I’ve gotten dirty in my day and when I was a boy Saturday night was bath night but I don’t think I ever made THAT much of a ring. We’ve raised four children and bathed several dogs and I feel bad for that guy if that’s a weekly problem for him.

Does everybody have a favorite pen and what makes it your favorite? Is it the grip or the feel? Is it the way the ink flows? Do you prefer a gel pen? Magic marker? Pencil?

One of my sportscaster colleagues likes to poke fun at me because I often use a Paper Mate Flair Pen. True, it’s a throwback to the ‘70s but they still make them and I love them. I can’t really find a use for the pastel colors that come in the multi pack but give me a nice black or blue and I’m all set.

I finally had a chance to catch a few movies I had never seen before.

We do “Take out and movie night” once a week and my son, Matt, has made a few good suggestions this summer.

I finally saw “Shawshank Redemption” with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins.  Here’s the description at IMDb.com:

Over the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.

Last week we watched “My Big Fat Greek Wedding.” It’s a comedy that came out in 2002 starring Nia Vardalos, John Corbett and Michael Constantine. Funny movie about a young Greek woman (Vardalos) who marries someone who is not Greek (Corbett) and struggles to get her family to like and accept him.

We should probably check out the sequels.
When you don’t know what to watch this summer, check out some you’ve never seen or rewatch a classic.

And finally….

Here’s an idea I came across in a post:

A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.

Ain’t it the truth? Whenever you’re feeling down or worn out by life, having a good laugh can help you deal with it whether it’s from watching a funny show or laughing with friends. And a good, long sleep? Everything always looks better in the morning after a good rest. It may have dominated your thoughts last night but if you get a good night’s sleep I’ve always found that I could look at a problem differently or realize it wasn’t all that major to begin with.

Wow this column is Great ! and so funny. …I never had a dishwasher and I know I taught my kids how to wash and drain the dishes. But recently my daughter (many moons later) washed my dishes and I later noticed they were not stacked at all like I always did. I thought to myself “these kids do not know how to do dishes anymore because of the dishwasher.” Good grief ! Thanks for your funny column. It was ALL familiar.
