Trying A New Approach This Year

Simple things

Tuesday was my birthday! I was thinking about how I’ve had 61 years of blessings. A little adjustment in thinking.

We seem to have a tendency to look back at all the things we’ve been through and have had to deal with throughout our years but if you stop and think: you’ve probably had some great things as well.

I met and married my best friend and soulmate over 40 years ago. We had some amazing times! Cruises, a trip to Europe, romantic getaways, concerts and ball games. Buying our house and making it a home.

Then came our biggest adventure with the birth of our children. We had four terrific additions to our family that brought along their own amazing stories. There were plenty of times when we didn’t know what we were doing but we managed. They all gave us so many memories with school, sports and their interests. I can honestly say they have all grown into amazing adults and it is so much fun to watch them discover themselves. And of course, now the grandchildren stage has begun.

Were there difficult times? Of course, but the good far outweighs the bad.

I had so much fun in my work. As I look back on it now I realize that I took it far too seriously but, it is what it is. I’ve been a deejay, a newsman, a talk show host, a sports talk show host, a newspaper columnist, an author and I even had the chance to do my dream job: baseball play by play. True, I never got to do it for the Red Sox but I did have the chance to cover Spring Training a few times so I got to experience being around the players in the locker room and spent a few days in the press box.

I worked with some fantastic people and I cherish the memories of the times we had together. Yes there were some I’d rather forget and gladly I have. For the most part.

I coached all four children in baseball or softball. Sure there were some “interesting” experiences with youth sports but I met many great kids and parents and I had a great tan every summer. I also like to think it kept me young.

So many experiences! How about you? Do you ever take the time to think back on the good times and the feelings you had when they happened? When you first learned or discovered something? When you first met someone special? Sometimes we get so used to something being a part of our lives that we forget the wonder of discovering it or meeting someone for the first time.

I’ve also started a “Blessings Book” where, every night, I challenge myself to list five things I’m thankful for. So far so good but I’m sure this might get difficult sometimes. However, if you think carefully, I’m sure you can find five things you’re thankful for every day. Why not give it a try?

So I’m starting another trip around the sun! Let’s see what awaits me this year.

One of our great memories of both of you is participating in Bob Y’s famed Road Rallies, which took us all over creation as we vied for that trophy!! I recall your team was “The Happy Couple” and so you remain.
As it happens, it’s a splendid analogy for life: a journey, great companionship and some sweet prizes.
