Trying Something For The First Time

I have a confession to make.

No, it’s not that I’m giving up on the Red Sox though that is tempting. I lived through the early years, I’ll survive this.

No I’m not suddenly anti-mask. I have several and try to coordinate with my outfits. Question though: Should I match my shirt or shoes? I usually try to match my shirt.

No my confession is….. wait for it….. I’m voting by mail.
(Duh duh duhhh!)

In case you don’t know, I’m down in Virginia Beach taking care of my grandson when my daughter and son-in-law have to work. I was originally going to be heading back north at the end of September but thanks to Coronavirus I’m extended until probably spring. I don’t mind as everybody has made me super comfortable and I FaceTime with Priscilla every day. She also makes a trip down here about every month or so.

So yes, I sent in the request to have my ballot sent to me here. Am I worried that it won’t be counted? Not really. I trust the Postal System as I have a few well respected friends that have worked there over the years. Have there been problems with the mail in the past? Sure, but I think you can say that about any company that large.

Am I worried that it will take longer to get a final count because of the mail? I’m not worried because I don’t see what the issue is if we don’t have an answer for a few days. I think with something this important, it’s crucial they get it right. I remember the days of the “hanging chad” (Bush/Gore) when we waited for that year’s election results.

I am alarmed by some of the stories I’m reading about the changes going on at the USPS. Some stories say they are removing mailboxes to make voting more difficult while other stories say it’s just routine maintenance and they always pick up the boxes to remove graffiti and give them a new paint job. Hmmm. I just hope Congress keeps an eye on this, though I’m afraid that lately Congress can’t agree on anything.

So there you go! I actually wrote a political column this week. I tried to keep it neutral just like I used to on the radio. I have my view, you have yours. And guess what? It’s okay if they’re not the same.

I voted absentee for the first time when I had my knee done and didn’t expect to be able to stand in line. I did it not by mail because I was mobile when I got the ballot and simple went to Town Hall and I vote in a private column and they sealed and certified the ballot in front of me. This year, because of my less than stellar immune system, I was told by Dr N to not go to the polls but, to get an absentee ballot, Frank got his, too. That was for what should have been the April Town election that ended up being done in June. At the time I requested the ballot from Dartmouth Town Hall, I was given the option to request ballots for the entire year of 2020 be sent to me. Frank & I both did it and we are all set. This type of ballot is not what all the hoopla is about. It is generated by your home Town Clerk. In Dartmouth, we do not have to mail it back using USPS. We have a box in the parking lot of Town Hall that is used for tax payts, etc and they also accept Absentee Ballots. These ballots are not the same as the ones that are the focus of all the media and political hype. If you go on line to the Town of Fairhaven and check the Town Clerks office, you can order it to be sent to VA address and you fill it out and Mail it back to Town Hall or to Priscilla if you want to have her drop it off. The completed ballot has to be returned to the Clerk by the close of the polls on election day and it could be hand carried to the polling place by Priscilla when she goes to vote or it can be dropped off to the clerk’s office anytime before election day. When you fill out the Absentee Ballot, they give you a special envelope and instructions on how to address it and seal it before it is returned to the Town. The whole process is a lot simpler than it sounds and you can sign up for the ballots for the remaining elections in 2020 and it you will be there in 2021, you can order the paperwork to start the process again for 2021. At that time, you can choose to do it one election at a time or order for the entire year. I would think Fairhaven is a lot like Dartmouth and there is only 1 local election a year. In that case, you don’t need to order for the year, just as the election – local or state comes up. The process of getting stuff through Town Hall, was very simple for me and it arrived within a week of my request and we voted and dropped in the box the next day. Take care and stay safe.
