Mother’s Day 2020 – Good luck guys!
The reason I wish “guys” good luck is because, I feel, it’s usually up to the husband (or significant other) to come up with the ideas until the children reach a certain age. And this year it’s a challenge.
With “social distancing” some of the usual ideas are off the table. There is no going out for lunch or brunch or dinner. No movie or mini golf. By the way, do we even have mini golf around here anymore?
Hopefully you placed your Amazon order in time for delivery or you’ll be like me. I bought my wife a beautiful gift. Delivery is expected between May 14 – May 27th. Yeah, I did that. “Trust me honey, you’re going to love it!”
Breakfast in bed is still an option. My wife “enjoyed” a few with runny eggs and burnt toast. One year the children even did the clean up so I thought that was cool.
Another change this year was the lack of crafts coming home from elementary school. If you are a cool dad you planned ahead and bought some popsicle sticks or pipe cleaners and made something cute.
I have a good friend who’s a florist. I usually try not to bother her this time of year, it’s kind of like their Super Bowl Sunday. I can only imagine what it’s like this year: didn’t the governor just let them open on Monday or Tuesday?
It’ll be fun to see the posts today of how people celebrate their mother. Maybe a drive-by parade by older children with streamers and balloons? Maybe a serenade on the sidewalk? I’m sure FaceTime and Zoom will be busy with video calls. I’ll be wishing my wife, Priscilla, a happy Mother’s Day via FaceTime today as we’re not even in the same state.
If your mom has passed, don’t be sad today. I know it’s tough but think of the good times and the memories you shared. If you had a difficult relationship with your mom and you don’t even talk anymore, think of someone in your life who filled that role for you. An aunt, friend, or maybe your dad.
My daughter, Sarah, is celebrating her first Mother’s Day as a mom. I don’t know what little Liam is planning, he wouldn’t tell me. He also didn’t hit me up for any money so I don’t what they’re doing today. I do plan to leave her alone so she can enjoy. I could be a wise guy: call her and tell her I need to go to the store to play a number!
I wish all mothers, and those who fill the role of mother, a Happy Mother’s Day! Whether it’s a virtual hug, a loving phone call/text or a gift that arrives a week late (I can’t BELIEVE I did that), know that you are loved.
