“Pete’s Daily Connection”

Woof Wednesday

Hi guys! It’s me, Oscar the Beagle. I’m just trying to find a way that I can get my buddy Baxter to chill out!

I told you last week how you humans have no idea what it’s like to get old. You just don’t. I turned 12 the other day. Thanks for the card. I don’t really make a big thing out of my birthday, though a gift would have been nice. Grammy did give me a cupcake.

Anyway, Baxter is still 11 until September but he’s having a few issues too. No he doesn’t have bronchitis like I do but he does have a pretty bad case of arthritis. And why does everything end in “itis?” I’ll have to look that up.

Yeah he’s having a little trouble getting up the stairs. The other night he went up for bedtime and stopped about halfway up. He was just kinda sitting there, stuck, after the back end gave out. He gave a weird little whine that scared the heck out of Uncle Matt. Of course I understood him perfectly. He was just saying, “A little help here!”

Yesterday I had just come in when our neighbor walked by with Finley, another Golden. Baxter got all excited; ran past Uncle Matt; tried to leap off the porch; forgot the back end doesn’t always work and face-planted in the backyard. I felt bad for the guy. He was ok, I just think he hurt his pride.

I’ve been trying to tell him to just take it easy. We’re not pups anymore. Plus, if you give the humans the sad eye look, they pamper you.

Grammy now gives me a massage with Olive oil every day that she’s home. It’s really helping my skin where I’ve lost some fur. It’s like an all over belly rub. And if I’m having some aches and pains I just pause at the stairs, look up to the top and they pick me up and carry me. True, Baxter’s a little bigger. Maybe we need one of those chair lifts like I’ve seen on the TV thing. Or an elevator. No escalator! Those things scare me.

Baxter’s not listening to me yet though. He keeps trying to do these things. He does wait for help to get up on the big bed. When he finally makes it upstairs he puts his front paws on the bed and then just waits for Grammy to lift the caboose.

I’ll keep trying though. You just have to chillax! Give the sad puppy eyes and take what you can get.

Now, get off my bed!
