Looking Through The Eyes of a Puppy

I had forgotten what life was like living with a puppy. For the past few weeks I’ve been taking care of my daughter’s dogs while she and her husband were on vacation. One dog is 5 years old and the other is a puppy. A puppy who is very busy.

As you know I have two dogs who are both eleven. I know them. I know their routines. I know what they like and what they don’t. I forgot that, to a puppy, everything is new and everything is exciting.

I know my guys: we go to bed and I know they’re going to sleep. I forgot that when you go to bed with a puppy in the room, the slightest noise or movement can wake him up and then he’s got to know what’s going on! “Is it play time? Meal time? Where ya going?”

This week I started thinking how wonderful it would be if we could see things through the eyes of a puppy. Can you imagine?

You’d wake up in the morning excited because it was a new day! “Oh boy! I wonder what will happen today?” You see your (spouse, friend, children) and you are so happy because they’re the most wonderful person in the world!

Instead of stumbling to the coffee pot and throwing a bagel in the toaster you’re excited because it’s meal time! You have food and something to drink and you’re so happy because you have everything you need.

Then the day begins and you only focus on what’s in front of you. There are no worries about the future and no thoughts about the past. Just now! There are new things to explore, toys to enjoy and when you need a nap….. you just nap.

Your day is not loaded with tasks that you have to do or any mundane job that you have to go to.

A walk outside can be your favorite part of the day. You’re not focused on any step count or weight to lose you’re just thrilled to be outside so you can explore. Plus you’re probably with your favorite person. There’s so much to see and even more things to sniff.

You’re not afraid of bills in the mail or whether or not you have everything you need for your taxes. You just get afraid when a door slams or there’s some late-night thunder. You discover that most things that startle you are okay once you sniff them.

You don’t worry about politics or any drama at work you just focus on what’s in front of you. What can I play with? Where should I sleep? I bet that sneaker tastes great!

It was just a reminder to me that, many times, I think we worry about too much. We spend so much time focusing on things that really shouldn’t have that much of a hold on us. Let’s focus on what’s in front of us at that moment. Let’s enjoy the wonderful world around us and let’s love it when our special people come home.

Tail wagging is optional.
