We just got back from another trip to Virginia Beach……10-plus hours in the car. Again! You’d think by now I would be used to this but I’m not.
I’ve done this trip both ways: drive and fly. I have to say my choice would be to fly. We can’t always do it because of the cost but I do like it when I fly. It’s still a long day but it’s broken up. They don’t have any direct flights from Providence so I usually change planes in Baltimore. You can get up and walk around the airport, there are connecting flights so you move from one plane to another. In the car…you sit. And sit.
I think I’ve told you before that the family doesn’t like me driving in unfamiliar places since my stroke so I am the passenger on these car trips. Ten or eleven hours in that passenger seat…yup. Thank God it reclines. I try to bring things to do but by the time I figure out my grocery list, the menu for the week and this week’s blog…hey look at that! Only nine more hours to go!
It did seem to fly by when I was traveling with Sarah and Liam, my grandson. I would sit in the back with him and try to keep him busy. Of course the backseat looked like a war zone by the time we got there.
My wife, Priscilla, prefers to drive instead of flying saying she likes the freedom. She can travel when she wants. She can bring as much as she wants (Bags go free!). You can shop as much as you want without worrying about bringing extra bags. When the kids need northern supplies, like Fluff or snow shovels, she can bring it as long as it fits. Plus she can now bring our puppy Charlie even though one little puppy managed to take up the whole backseat.
It’s funny how my Megabucks dream has changed over the years. I used to want to retire or buy a new car or a huge house. Now I just want to be able to buy our own Jet and hire some pilots. This way we could go from New Bedford Airport to Norfolk. We could probably do it in three hours. Ahhhh. I guy can dream.
