Hello friends, it’s Grampy taking back control of my tablet.
I know many of you like Woof Wednesday and Oscar shows me your comments every week. Sometimes I think this is all going to his head.
I just wanted to tell you that this week we almost lost my little buddy. Don’t worry he seems to be getting better.
As you may know, Oscar has a sinus issue that has developed into pneumonia at least three times. Priscilla has talked with the veterinarians at Capeway Veteranary Hospital and he has now been diagnosed with Chronic Bronchitis. How I’m going to get this dog to use an inhaler… I don’t know.
The other night we noticed he was acting sluggish and when he didn’t want to eat —– I knew something was wrong. This dog does a happy dance like Snoopy at mealtime that I’ve been trying to catch on video. The other day though, NO interest. He wouldn’t even take his cracker at “medicine time” and while I snacked on some chocolate chip cookies, he didn’t beg me for any.
While he was coughing, he vomited a couple of times, (sorry to be graphic but it’s important to the story,) and evidently he inhaled part of that and ended up with some of it in his lungs. Priscilla tells me that’s called Aspiration Pneumonia and can be very serious.
He didn’t sleep much that night as he was having trouble breathing. Priscilla was thinking of taking him to the 24-hour clinic in Bourne but felt they wouldn’t understand his complicated history. He made it through the night and went to see Dr. Gaudette first thing in the morning.
He was in rough shape. They took Xrays of his lungs which turned out to be pretty ugly. He got some injections of steroids and antibiotics and they sent him home with some new meds. I’m happy to say that 24 hours later he was showing some improvement.
I wasn’t home when Priscilla took Oscar in but she tells me Baxter was very concerned as he saw his buddy being carried to the car. Bax started jumping for joy, barking and sniffing Oscar when they came home. Priscilla said it was almost like he was afraid he would never see his friend again.
So yeah, we were pretty worried.
I know that day will come but at least NOT TODAY. Oscar has been told to take it easy so we can’t take him for a walk for a bit and he gets carried upstairs every night by Grammy or Uncle Matt. He seems just fine with all that.
Oh and last night I had a couple fudge cookies (What can I say, I like cookies!) Guess who was right by my side?
Woof Wednesday appears every Wednesday at petebraley.com. It is the world through the eyes of 11-year old Oscar the Beagle. Oscar lives in Fairhaven with Pete, Priscilla and Uncle Matt and his best buddy Baxter the Golden Retriever.
