No, she never said “Life is like a box of chocolates.” I probably ate all the chocolates (except for the cream-filled kind. I never liked those).
My mother always said, “There’s a reason God gives children to the young.” And boy has that been true this week.
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE having my grandson visit. With him now living in Texas, I never get to see him enough. We FaceTime almost every day but it’s not the same.
But wow! Is this boy ever busy!!!
I’m sure my four children were just as active but I was much younger then.
My daughter, Sarah (Liam’s mother), went back to Texas last Wednesday and Liam is spending another week with us. I’m taking him home next Wednesday. This is his first stay without his mom so we were bracing ourselves for some tears but he’s been terrific! He FaceTimes mom and dad every day and tells them he misses them but he hasn’t had a sad time at all.
He’s been sleeping late just about every morning. My wife and I think that’s because he is so busy during the day. He wakes up around 8 or 9 a.m. and…. He’s off! We watch some cartoons over breakfast. Right now he’s into Phineas and Ferb so that’s kind of cool.
He’s enjoying his time at Grammy and Grampy’s. Walking the beach every morning with my wife and our dog. They’re collecting sea glass for his teacher. My daughter thinks he’s just enjoying being outside because, even with our recent heatwave, it’s still cooler than summer in South Texas.
We’ve gone for ice cream, toasted S’mores over a camp fire, had plenty of family time with uncles, aunts and new baby Carson.

We’ve only had one rainy day so far so we went to the Fall River Children’s Museum. Many thanks to my friend Ken for the suggestion. That’s really a fun place. I highly recommend it. It’s easy to get to and they have several rooms for children to explore. It’s in an old courthouse so the building is beautiful. They also have plenty of benches for the grandparents to sit on while the kids explore. Liam especially liked the Space Room and the Dinosaur room.

He was a little hyper as we left the museum Friday. I decided to start playing “I Spy” on the drive home from Fall River. It was fun until I started to run out of things to spy. There are only so many colors on Rte 195.
Not gonna lie: I have enjoyed some of the special groceries I had to buy. Goldfish crackers and Mega Stuff Oreos are always a welcome snack. For Grampy too, not just Liam.
We probably watch a little more TV than mommy would like but sometimes I just need a rest.
Liam may not be excited when bedtime roles around but Grampy is! We read a few chapters in his chapter book (The Magic Treehouse series) and then it’s “lights out.” I usually fall asleep about the same time he does. I haven’t read any one of my books in about a week.
Anytime spent with Liam is always refreshing. Tiring but refreshing. He always reminds me to live in the moment and appreciate what’s right in front of you.
And when, out of the blue, you hear, “I love you Grampy” … it just makes you forget about all the problems in your world. They don’t seem that big at all.
