Clean Up In Aisle 2!

I was amazed today when I went shopping at a local store and it looked like a tornado had blown through before I got there! Well maybe not that bad but it was a mess.

I won’t name the store but it’s one of the more popular. You know….the one with the big red balls out front.

When I walked in I first noticed the empty clearance shelves. I don’t know if they sold out of everything they had marked down or if they just didn’t have the people to keep up with it. Then I noticed the shoe aisle where there were mismatched shoes on the floor, open boxes left everywhere and just “stuff” all over the place!

Why?

There are probably a number of reasons. It is a big weekend for back-to-school shopping and I’m sure it’s not easy to keep up. There’s also been a lot written about the shortage of workers. I keep seeing openings everywhere.

I also wonder if shoppers are getting a little lazy. Hear me out: do you think some people just leave things wherever when they decide they don’t want them? Do they think, “Someone will pick it up. That’s their job.” What if it isn’t? Especially since there are so many places that are short staffed maybe they don’t have anyone for that anymore.

Back in my day!

I was raised to pick up after myself. If I tried on shoes, for example, and then decided I didn’t want them, I would put them back! Where they go! I wonder if most people do that anymore.

There seems to be a lack of caring. “It’s not MY job!” “Ah somebody will do it.” Why is it always somebody else’s problem? Would it really take THAT much of your time if you helped out?

I’m not saying that would correct every problem but maybe if we at least picked up after ourselves, the staff at some of these stores could focus on some of the other issues to keep things moving smoothly.

Unless this is what they’re calling the “new normal.” If it is, I’m not a fan.

I think it is like that most places Pete ….people do not respect their own responsibility to clean up after themselves and think someone else will …I do Find in Florida that most , but not all stores, are kept organized but I think it is because we are a hospitality state and it is our economy’s lifeblood . Unfortunately I think people are under- trained …they are thrown into their jobs without proper training just to get someone in the position.

There’s an expression my dad always used, “if you pay peanuts you get monkeys.” The result of their cheap pay, non-existent benefits and practice of not giving employees full-time hours has further compounded the problem of employees with “not my circus, not my monkeys” attitudes. The majority of these companies have online applications only, making the process of landing a job, in the community where the applicant prefers to work, very difficult. When I was up Stop & Shop for the past couple of years, they constantly had help wanted signs up but they never seem to hire anyone including young people like my son, who could apply online only even though I was an employee who had direct contact with the hiring managers. The chances of his application being seen by anyone in Fairhaven was slim to none. The stores also purposely remain understaffed because they expect their minimum wage employee to happily do the work of three people, resulting in the “I don’t care” attitudes amongst their staff. All of these are reasons why the stores are a mess but those reasons shouldn’t be used as excuses by the employees.

They’re taking jobs away from the kids. Just like at the grocery store making us do self check out. I am going to complain a little here, I buy a lot of produce, at Price Rite down the south and at times there’s not even one aisle open it’s all self check out…
