Seriously, is there anything better?
Maybe it’s been a crazy week with so much to do that you don’t even know where to start. Or, if you’re still in a self-quarantine, it can be a way to make the time to go by.
It can be a great escape from the cold and snow up north or the days and days of rain that we’ve had here in Virginia.
Everything was done
There I was on a Saturday with nothing that I had to do. The laundry was already done, house was clean. I had made a Target run with my daughter so I had picked up what I needed. Sarah was home to spend time with her son. There was nothing keeping me —- from that nap!
Nap. Even the word sounds warm and comfortable.
I put my grandson down for a nap every afternoon. He doesn’t put up much of a fight anymore. Liam used to hate being put in his crib for a nap, it was almost like he was afraid he was going to miss something. I tried telling him I’d make sure to have no fun until he was back with me.
That reminded me of a joke that goes: “Do you remember a time in your life when you DIDN’T want a nap?” I can’t remember who told that joke and when I Googled it I got thousands of links to sites about “napping” but not the origin of that joke.
What I found online
Among the sites I found:
The benefits of napping.
The science of naps.
How to nap like a pro.
Is napping good for you?
Health benefits of napping.
I just know that I love naps, always have. While I can’t remember my toddler years (It’s been awhile), I think I started with naps when I started morning radio in 1982. My body did not like waking up at 4 a.m. and I would often nap in the afternoon. When the children came along it was a necessity to nap a little if they had a game that night.
Back then it was important to nap just to survive and thrive. Nowadays I feel like I’ve earned it. I think anyone who is near 60 (Yikes! That’s me!) or over has definitely earned it.
Over the years
I don’t know about you but I’ve become more of a nap connoisseur as I’ve aged. My wife used to say that I could sleep anywhere and I think it was true. Now, I pay more attention to where I nap as in on a couch or in bed. I like the room darkened and a bit chilly. A nice fleece blanket is appreciated. I’m tempted to try those weighted blankets but my wife is afraid I’ll never get up.
In Fairhaven one of my favorite nap spots is our front room. Priscilla has fixed it up nicely since the children moved out; it used to be the girl’s room. It has a beach feel and in the summer it gets an ocean breeze and on a stormy day you can hear the rain on the roof. Ahhhh!
Is there anything better?
It’s almost like I’ve discovered a new hobby. Can napping be a hobby? Well let’s check the definition:
Hobby
noun
“an activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure.”
Well that settles it!
