It’s the first blog of the new year. And as we look ahead, what is it that I want to say? Everything I think of sounds cliche.
“It’s the first day of a new year. 365 blank pages in a book that’s waiting to be filled.” Like no one’s ever used THAT line before. In fact, I did, last year.
Good Riddance!
I had the same problem New Year’s eve. I wanted to write something about the end of 2020 but we all felt the same way: good riddance!
2020 did have it’s good parts though. I know some people that had a baby. I know others who got married. Then there were those who got fired. And those who got sick. And those we lost. Yes there were plenty of bad stories and stories about things that were cancelled or taken away but there were some good moments.
So what about now? What’s next? Are you making any resolutions? I see many people who just want things back to normal. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if this year there are fewer people who make resolutions. We just want to survive. We want to get back to going to concerts, being in crowds, cheering on our favorite team from inside the stadium and not on the couch.
I kinda like some social distancing
I think I’ve mentioned before how I think some of the changes for Covid have actually been a good thing. I’m not gonna lie, I like parts of social distancing. There were times when I felt people were getting too close, up in my space. I also had issues with handshaking especially during cold and flu season. And I never realized until we stopped blowing out birthday candles, we’ve been spitting on the cake for years!
I enjoyed having that middle seat open on airplanes but I know that won’t last. You can check the list here. I also think we’ve seen the end of snow days now that virtual learning works. And Zoom meetings are quick and efficient, saves travel time and pants are optional.
No really, it WILL end
In conversations this Christmas it was bound to come up: when do you think this will end? I’m thinking we should be back to almost normal by summer. The majority of people should have the vaccine. I think we will still have some random outbreaks from time to time but I would think we can look forward to restaurants and churches being able to go back to their regular ways by June or July but I’m sure there will be some changes.
What do you think? What would you like to see in this new year? Maybe instead of the usual New Years resolutions like “join the gym, eat smarter, less time on my phone,” you could think about what you’re going to do once the restrictions are lifted. People you’re going to go see or businesses you’ll support. How will this whole adventure change you?
Have hope
Make some plans based on what you’ve missed and what’s really important to you. Then get ready to put those plans into action. Hey, it’s something to be hopeful for.
