Just Go! You Might Like It!

Sometimes you just gotta get dressed and go!

Last Saturday my son, Doug, told me that he had two tickets to the “Bobby Bones and the Raging Idiots Show” down here in Virginia Beach. He thought I would enjoy it. That night. 7:00pm. My first thought was, “Yeah, he’s funny. I’d like that.” My next thought was, “Oh tonight? Uh, it’s been a long week.”

First of all, if you don’t know, Bobby Bones is host of the nationally syndicated “The Bobby Bones Show” on about a hundred radio stations. The closest to New Bedford is “101.7 The Bull” in Boston. I started listening to him on the iHeart app. He’s also a mentor on “American Idol” and actually won “Dancing With The Stars” last year. He’s an author, standup comic and has a band called “The Raging Idiots” which is basically Bobby and a member of his show, Eddie, doing comedy songs they have written and he brings some young artists along with him.

Where was I?

If you or anyone you love deals with a disability or chronic pain issue, you know that activities or just life can take a lot out of you/us. I had just had my first week of taking care of my grandson and by Saturday morning I was pooped. But! I wanted to see that show and Doug seemed happy to take me.

He got the tickets when a friend found out she was deploying on the same ship that Doug’s wife Marla was on. She just GAVE the tickets to Doug. Little did we know that when we got to the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts the seats were third row in the Orchestra pit. Oh Yeah!

Back to that early-aftenoon: For a moment I thought that maybe Doug should take his sister, my daughter, Sarah, as she’s a big Bobby Bones fan. But then I thought, “No. I want to go. Let’s make this happen.”

I’m happy to say that after a two-hour nap, I went, and I laughed, and I had a good time.

I’m not saying you should always push through no matter what. I’ve been dealing with this long enough that I think I know my body and what it needs.

I often talk about that little voice inside your head. Sometimes it can be a good guide but other times it can be a limiting force. “You can’t do that.” “You’ll never make it.”

Sometimes you just have to ignore it and live. Try saying yes to more this new year.
