I feel it’s time for my annual reminder about fireworks.
About three or four years ago I found this picture. I never really thought about it but I can certainly understand it now.
Anyone who has been in a war zone that was under attack and wondered if the next boom would be the last sound they ever heard—- I can respect that.
I know that pets are bothered by the sounds.
My friend Greg posted this picture today and said, “Can we at least agree on a 10pm cutoff?”
We used to have a big dog named Humphrey. He was a Rottweiler/Shepard mix. Yup! A big ole boy but he was great with the kids. However, when the fireworks went off he would jump in the bathtub. After awhile he would fall asleep and when you went to use the bathroom later, this big bear would rise up out of the tub, “Hey! What’s up?”
In case you’re wondering, Oscar the Beagle and Baxter the Golden just sleep through the noise, though they are a little restless.
My daughter Sarah has a problem with fireworks but I can understand her situation too. She was near the finish line at the Boston Marathon in 2013 when the bombs went off. She told me today that the only place she can watch fireworks is at Disney World. I asked if it was because she felt safe there and she said yes, plus they are set to the music so it doesn’t seem to bother her.
Every year on the 4th she and her husband Steven decline invites to barbecues, close all the windows and either turn up the music or watch movies. It also offers a shelter to her dog who doesn’t like loud noises.
I don’t mean to come off as a member of the “No Fun Police.” I enjoy fireworks just as much as anyone else. I sit in my front yard with a cool beverage and just look out over Fort Rodman/Fort Taber. I can usually see the New Bedford fireworks but the illegal ones are just as entertaining. I can’t imagine what some people must pay for these.
The other night I was doing some dishes when somebody set off a few firecrackers. I was impressed thinking, “Hmm. Starting on June 28th, you must have some budget.”
All I’m asking is that you be aware of who is in your neighborhood if you can. If you know there’s a veteran, let them know that you’re having a party and when the fireworks may be going off. Be considerate if you know there are young children around and maybe wrap it up before it gets too late. Some people may have to work the next day.
Be safe too. I always think about the combination:
Alcohol + Fireworks = oops!
I should also add the disclaimer: Fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts. There. I said it.
Enjoy your Independence Day, be safe, and please be considerate.
