I found myself getting angry yesterday. Angry when I read a post on Facebook from the Fairhaven Police Department.
“This is unacceptable. Fairhaven High School was vandalized by a person who felt their trash should be spread across a building that means so much to this town. “
Someone “tagged “ or put graffiti on the walls of Fairhaven High School. Defamed, vandalized, take your pick.
I have no doubt that they will find the person, in fact, they might have found them already. There was some surveillance video but I actually think, with this being the kind of town it is, someone will know him or her or recognize their style. If you call that style. They will probably brag about it to somebody and then that will get around town.
Everyone that I’ve talked to is appalled by this and I agree but also have to wonder, “What were they thinking?”
What drives someone to do this? Is it just the rebelliousness of youth? Do they not care? Do they lack structure at home?
I’d like to say it’s a sign of the times but this type of vandalism has been around for years.
I think it’s amazing how so many people in town and in the area put the school on such a pedestal. The Henry Huttleston Rogers “gift” truly is the “Castle on the Hill.”
So many former students commented on line, remembering their time at school or proms or the many people who have posed for pictures there over the years, my family included.
Many thanks to Manny Ribeiro who was able to clean it up spending all morning scrubbing and power washing.
I’m sure the people responsible will be found and here’s hoping this never happens again.
