We Were So Young and Yes, I Had Hair

Back at it after a day off yesterday.

Priscilla and I celebrated our 37th anniversary. She posted our wedding picture on Facebook.

Yes, I had hair. I especially liked Norm’s post. Norm and I coached Little League together and he said, ” I had no idea you married Gabe Kaplan’s younger brother!”

Priscilla was 18 and I was 20. It was a hot, humid Friday night with a downpour while we were in the church. We got married at Smith Mills Church in Dartmouth, the old sanctuary on Rte 6 that I think is a Yoga studio now.

We went for a nice lunch at Cleary’s Pub in Fairhaven. I hadn’t been there yet but I definitely will be back as I noticed they had my favorite Macallan scotch on display.  Midday was a little too early for me to imbibe.

100 WINS!

The Red Sox won their 100th game of the year last night. A great accomplishment but I didn’t realize they haven’t done that since….wait for it….1946!

I read a Tweet that said the last time they won 100 games the line up included Johnny Pesky, Dom DiMaggio and Ted Williams. Wow!

Of course the sad thing is, if they don’t make it past the first round of the playoffs no one will remember.

HURRICANE FLORENCE

Of course the news is dominated by the hurricane.

I found an interesting link to a live camera of the storm.

I don’t know how long it will stay up, but it’s getting WILD out there.

The webcam at the Frying Pan Shoals Light Tower is located approximately 39 miles southeast of Southport, North Carolina and 32 miles from Bald Head Island, North Carolina.

RIDING IT OUT

I’ve seen many stories about the people who are not evacuating. There was an interview on NBC last night with a couple that is staying put. I think it’s because they have no money. They didn’t say exactly but it seems they have no money to buy gas for their car (I don’t even know if they have a car), plus you need to buy some provisions or a hotel room. I suppose you could stay at a shelter but if they have no money to get there……

SORRY SHARKNADO FANS

A viral photo making waves claims Hurricane Florence is lifting sharks out of the ocean making for a real-life Sharknado. Is it true?

All week long the site Verify has been tracking the rumors and misinformation coming out of Hurricane Florence.

Though widely-shared, we can Verify right off the bat, this one is FALSE.

The photo imitates a television breaking news graphic, similar to CNN; however, the photo was created on a site called, “BreakYourOwnNews.com,” which does exactly what it sounds like. The same fake photo circulated during last year’s Hurricane Irma.

Sites like these are seriously dangerous, breeding misinformation. Rush Limbaugh was duped by the doctored picture and reported the photo as fact on September 11.

“Those of you in the target path in North Carolina/South Carolina in addition to the floods, in addition to the cars rolling around on the waters in front of your house…now you might end up with a shark in your front yard,” Limbaugh said. “You think I’m making this up?”

So we can Verify, no Hurricane Florence is not barreling sharks towards the Carolina coast.

WHAT A STORY HE HAS TO TELL

The secret formula for WD-40 has a new home after transferring banks.

The recipe for the the water displacing spray was in a suitcase handcuffed to the CEO as it was escorted by armed guards in a Brinks truck this morning.

The commonly used household product was invented in San Diego 65 years ago.

“It’s written on a spiral notepad and it is actually the notebook of the chemist at the time,” said WD-40 CEO Garry Ridge.

The formula has never been patented which is why there is such an emphasis on its security.

“I don’t know if I’ll ever see it again,” said Ridge kissing the suitcase before it was placed in the vault.

The $2.5 billion dollar company is headquartered in San Diego.

MICHELLE OBAMA BOOK TOUR

Michelle Obama will visit 10 cities to promote her memoir “Becoming,” a tour featuring arenas and other performing centers to accommodate crowds far too big for any bookstore.

The former first lady will begin at the United Center in her native Chicago on Nov. 13, the book’s release date.

Obama and former President Barack Obama each have been working on memoirs, for which they negotiated a multimillion dollar deal with Crown. No date has been set for his book, although it’s expected in 2019.

Her tour will be in Boston Nov. 24 at TD Garden.

THIS YEAR’S NOMINEES

This may be the year that chalk makes its mark on the National Toy Hall of Fame, or American Girl out muscles He-Man for a place of honor.

But don’t count out Uno or Magic 8 Ball, which are also in the running, along with Chutes and Ladders, the Fisher-Price Corn Popper, pinball, the sled, tic-tac-toe, Tickle Me Elmo and Tudor Electric Football.

The finalists for the hall of fame’s class of 2018 were announced Wednesday, chosen by staff from thousands of online nominations.

A committee of experts will choose which should take their place alongside other toy box mainstays like Barbie and Play-Doh in the western New York hall. The annual induction ceremony is Nov. 8.

Since the National Toy Hall of Fame was established at The Strong museum in 1998, 65 toys have been recognized for their longevity, innovation and ability to foster learning or discovery through play.

This year, fans are invited to vote for their favorites through Sept. 19 as part of a “Player’s Choice” ballot. The top three vote-getters will be factored in with ballots cast by a selection committee made up of industry, education and community experts.

AND WHOSE IDEA WAS THIS?

Cue the giggling: A small Missouri town has a new newspaper called The Uranus Examiner.

KYTV reports that the newspaper’s launch was announced Wednesday, just days after GateHouse Media said it was shuttering Pulaski County’s local paper, the Daily Guide.

The new publication’s editor, Natalie Sanders, led the Daily Guide before leaving in June to start what she calls a “fun” paper that will include local news and promote the tourist town of Uranus, which is pronounced the way any self-respecting class clown would say it.

Uranus sits along historic Route 66 and is known for quirky attractions, including a fudge shop and the world’s largest belt buckle.

Luge Hardman, the mayor of nearby Waynesville, where the Daily Guide was based, says she thinks the “innuendo” surrounding the new publication’s name will bring “public ridicule.”

I LIKE THIS PRINCIPAL

Actor Kevin Hart has surprised the students of a Dallas high school by dropping in to be interim principal for a day.

Hart told hundreds of cheering students at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts Wednesday that under his leadership they would be eating “chicken nuggets every day.”

The comedian encouraged students at the arts-focused magnet school to believe in their talents and not be discouraged if they are rejected. He said they know better than anyone what they are capable of doing.

Hart’s day at school was arranged to promote his new movie “Night School,” scheduled to open in theaters Sept. 28.
