“The Feel of Fall”

Now this is more like it.

I’m not going to lie, I liked having warm weather in late September and here in October but now that the weather has turned more fall-like it feels good.

Like many others, my wife and I try not to turn the heat on until November. We have a wood stove which usually does the job for us in the fall and early spring but we need to have the chimney sweep come by. It’s due for a cleaning and I really don’t like to take chances. This weekend the hoodies came out and I have to say I kinda like my fuzzy blanket on the couch while watching a game.

Yesterday my wife changed the clothes as we call it. That’s when the summer clothes go up in the attic and the winter clothes come down. It’s like Christmas! I forgot about that nice blue flannel shirt! I also didn’t realize there were that many UGG boots in this house.

I did a broadcast for a high school football game in Falmouth Friday night. The wool hats and blankets were out in the stands and hot chocolate was selling fast at the snack bar.

That’s the way it’s supposed to be!

Last Wednesday I did the broadcast at Greater New Bedford Voke Tech when the boys soccer team beat Apponequet. It was 78 degrees at game time and my partner Chris Santos and I enjoyed the weather and sat in the stands, both wearing shorts. That was odd.

It’s sad to see that a couple of trees in the neighborhood are already bare. The storm we had Thursday and Friday morning brought down quite a few leaves. There is some nice color and this area doesn’t usually peak until the end of the month. I guess the fact that we had that warm weather has kept some of the color from developing. I heard on the news that cold nights are needed for the process to be completed.

Don’t get me wrong, I do love summer the most but you have to admit that this summer was intense. I think I used the air conditioning more than I ever have. Cooking wasn’t much fun with the heat of the kitchen. “Preheat oven to 450? I don’t think so!”

I got back from Virginia about ten days ago and noticed my wife had taken our window air conditioning units out. I told her that was a sure sign that we’ll hit 80 degrees. It is nice to have the fresh air coming in again although I did leave two windows open the other night by accident. The next morning was definitely a fuzzy bathrobe day.

Fall is the favorite time of year for some. The oppressive heat is gone and the snow and ice still seem far away. The days are comfortable while the nights are chilly.

So put on your UGG boots, your Northface hoodies, grab a pumpkin spice beverage and check out the foliage. I have to be honest: I don’t like pumpkin flavoring myself. I know! A New Englander who doesn’t like pumpkin. What?

It’s time to watch the Sox wearing their cold gear and Balaclavas. (I had to look that one up.) My daughter and I went to a World Series game in 2013 and I think I had five layers on.

If I remember correctly I’ve always liked autumn with a chill in the air and the changing colors. I’m usually good until I have to scrape the windshield every morning.

Yeah. That’s not one of my favorite chores to do. You never leave yourself enough time in the morning and before you know it you’re late.

If we could just skip that whole snow and ice thing I’d be a happy man.
